Its been a good while since this has been a thing and I'd like to pick it back up.
Some administrative things: I'll be posting these regularly, but not every day. I'm going to be starting with some topics that will touch on fencing, but also go outside it to the more general SCA. Topics will evolve over time. I'm a big fan of using discussion boards for discussion. Facebook has its own challenges. I'll be posting a link to a discussion board thread with each of these. I'd love for you to use it, but if not, c'est la vie.
Question of the day:
Setting aside the Academy, what do you view a household as? Setting aside fencing, what do you view as an ideal or typical SCA household? What different types of households (or guilds or whatever else) do you see?

I see, or rather, what I want to see is a household consisting of a group of closer individuals who feel a bond of heightened camaraderie, a sense that you are a special part of their community and you would take precedence for whatever the household is for. I don’t even think you really need to like everyone in the household, you just need to feel the bond and believe that they have your back regardless and that you will have theirs. They are your ‘people’ above all others. Commitment.
I see fighting-oriented households, I’ve seen or heard of specific arts based households, and I’ve seen social households. I see the Academie d’Espee household/guild, and believe it attempts to instill the above desire.

"Household" usually just means a group of people united around "something."
The most successful households over the long term have a central leadership, usually a peer or peers. Someone has to be in charge, and the group has to collectively agree to follow that lead in the pursuit of whatever the group's mission is. Some of the big mercenary groups don't have a peer in charge, but they do have someone in charge. The secret is a clear purpose for existing.
They're different from guilds in that guilds are usually a lot less exclusive and usually have some set of rules that have been agreed to by the Crown at some point.
